Belfast Septet Channels Laurel Canyon Spirit in Debut Album
California Irish, a new seven-piece ensemble from Belfast, has released their debut album 'The Mountains Are My Friends', marking a bold stance against the growing trend of AI-generated music. The group, which initially formed to perform Neil Young tribute shows, has embraced an authentic analog recording process that captures the essence of late 1960s Laurel Canyon sound.
This album is the opposite of boring AI-generated, no soul perfection. We recorded this album in a room together over four days allowing the music to breathe when it needed to, looking at each other for our cues and feeding off each other's energy.
Vintage Recording Meets Modern Innovation
In an era where digital innovation dominates the music industry, California Irish chose to record their entire album in just five days, using traditional tape recording methods. This approach aligns with the band's commitment to preserving the warmth and human element in their music.
Musical Influences and Style
The band's sound features:
- Four-part harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
- Jangly guitars with alt-folk undertones
- Psychedelic elements blended with traditional folk structures
Drawing inspiration from iconic artists like Joni Mitchell and The Mamas and Papas, while also incorporating influences from contemporary Nordic folk movements, California Irish creates a unique bridge between classic and modern folk-rock traditions.
Album Availability and Social Media Presence
The Mountains Are My Friends is available on CD and vinyl, with singles streaming on major platforms. Fans can follow the band's journey through their active presence on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
